Healing My Roots
I am safe and at home in my body.
When I woke that day with my body inflamed and in so much pain, I knew intuitively that I was out of balance physically and emotionally. Immediate relief came through Western medicine; this got me to a place where I was mentally capable of addressing the underlying issues that were at the root of my distress.
To get to the root causes, I explored the emotional issues causing stress and inflammation through breathwork, movement, meditation, and self-inquiry journaling. Through this work, I gained more clarity, confidence, and guidance from my guides.
Then, I added energy work: massage, reiki, craniosacral therapy, and chakra balancing.
My most recent chakra balancing revealed that my root chakra was in dire need of more work. The person who did the clearing told me that she was able to bring all of my chakras into balance but, as I said, advised me to work more on the root chakra.
Discovering that my root chakra was out of balance indicated that I was not honoring my values. I had disconnected from my authentic self.
What are chakras?
Chakras are energy centers. There are a total of 114 energy chakra centers. However, most of us are primarily familiar with the seven “basic” chakras: root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown. These seven energy centers are attached to our physical body, they are the ones that we are most affected by.
In Sanskrit, the word “chakra” means “disk” or “wheel” and refers to the energy centers in your body. These wheels or disks of spinning energy each correspond to certain nerve bundles and major organs. Healthline.com
Each chakra has its own individual frequency that is constantly in harmony with the other energy centers. As long as the centers are in balance, their frequencies blend and interact to support us physically and emotionally. Keeping these centers in balance is essential for optimal mental and emotional well-being. When one is out of whack, it affects all the other chakras.
The root chakra is located at the base of the spine next to the perineum. It is our connection to Mother Earth and all of life. The Sanskrit word for the root chakra is Muladhara. It is an earth element represented by the color red.
An imbalanced root chakra can result in fatigue, weight loss or gain, problems sleeping, and issues in the lower back. It can also lead to emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, and lack of motivation, to name a few.
How to unblock and balance the root chakra.
Not surprisingly, much of the information I gleaned through my online research resulted in much of the same general information I already use and pass on to my clients. These include:
- Meditation: make this time a ritual by lighting candles and diffusing Patchouli essential oil.
- Breathwork: bring awareness to the breath, being conscious of inhaling and exhaling.
- Movement shifts our energy and our frequency. Some suggestions include a slow walk in nature, yoga, and dancing.
- Affirmations: changing our inner dialogue to one that will support and strengthen our awareness of our humanity and our connection to all things.
- Crystals: These are gifts from Mother Earth and help us maintain that connection. Consider red jasper or black tourmaline.
- Wear red – a dress, tee shirt, or even a scarf.
Why Patchouli essential oil?
Patchouli essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers and leaves of the plant. It has a calming effect on the body and can help reduce anxiety.
How to use essential oils:
Start by placing a drop or two in the palm of your hand and gently massaging it with the other hand. Now, bring your palms to your nose and inhale. Next, bring your hands down to the base of the spine. I also suggest tapping your third eye and sweeping your hands over your aura body.
Suggested affirmation:
I am safe and at home in my body.
Healing.
I see now that I had indeed disconnected from who I am. Taking the necessary time to tune into my physical and emotional body has been healing. I still have some work to do, but my body feels much lighter. I wake up happy, energized, and ready to take on the day.
When we shut ourselves off from who we really are, our bodies often become “talkative” through physical, emotional, mental, and/or spiritual symptoms—until we pay attention to them and rectify the situation.

Healing is always within our ability. It is a matter of balance. If we listen to our body and soul, what we need will always reveal itself. Be patient and kind.
