When you can be awesome!
As a kid, I only wanted to be like all the other kids. Instead, I wore glasses because I was cross-eyed. I was the odd kid, the one they called four-eyes. No, there was no fitting in. And there was no consoling or comforting. Adults said, “They’re only playing, just ignore them.” Ignoring them didn’t help.
No one said it was okay to be different.
Striving to be normal is giving up. It’s playing small and, truthfully, an insult to the Divine. It’s saying that I’m not worthy of being myself, that the person I am isn’t good enough. Why would you want to be anyone other than who you are? We were not created to all be the same. We were created to be the one splendid soul that we are.
I spent years trying to figure out what was wrong with me, why I wasn’t normal. The more I tried to be normal, the more fear and anxiety I felt. I was chasing something elusive.
Normal is a myth; it doesn’t exist.
There is no end to the list of ways for us to fit in, to indulge in the illusion of making ourselves appear normal. We are told how to dress, how to act, what to eat, what car to drive, where and how to live. The list is endless.
Why do I need to be like everyone else?
Individuals who fall outside these mythical norms risk being ostracized, punished, and shunned. The pressure to conform can be overwhelming and fearful, and lead to mental and emotional pain. Why? Because becoming normal is not possible.
I am somebody cause God don’t make no junk.
~Ethel Waters
Our task is to recognize that not only are we okay the way we are, but we are perfect, and there is no need to be anyone else. Normal is a myth; it is a lie. If we want to feel better about ourselves, we need to find the courage to surrender and embrace who we really are. Let’s take back our power. Let’s live to be the Divine, unique beings we already are.
Letting go of the quest to be normal opened the door for me. It allowed me to know my true divine nature.
If you’re trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.
~Maya Angelou
